  • Publication of the 85th  issue of the Development Bridge Series entitled "The Role of The Financial Sector in Development".

  • Publication of the Second  issue of volume 11 of the Journal of Development and Economic Policies-July 2009.

  • The Arab Planning Institute (API) held the Second Meeting of its board of trustees for 2008/2009 on 3/6/2009 in Damascus – Syria. The Meeting was chaired by Mr. Hisham Abdulla, Yemen's Representative in API’s Board of Trustees in his capacity as the Deputy Chairman. In attendance were representatives of 14 Arab member countries, API’s Director General - Dr. Essa Al-Ghazali, and Deputy Director General - Dr. Ali Abdel Ghadir Ali. The Board of Trustees adopted the proposed 2009/2010 work plan and budget.

  • Publication of the Arab Competitiveness Report 2009.

  • Publication of the 84th  issue of the Development Bridge Series entitled "Labor Supply and Economic Policies".

  • The Arab Planning Institute (API) conducted a training program for a Specialized Certificate on "Institutional Reform". The program was held during the period 11-22 May 2009 in Beirut, Lebanon.

  • The Arab Planning Institute (API) conducted a training program for a Specialized Certificate on "Development of Human Capital". The program was held during the period 3-14 May 2009 in Amman, Hashimite Kingdom of Jordan.

  • Publication of a new issue of the Working Paper Series, titled "Financial Integration of North Africa Stock Markets".

  • Publication of a new issue of the Working Paper Series, titled "Testing the Evolving Efficiency of 11 Arab Stock Markets".

  • Publication of the 83rd  issue of the Development Bridge Series entitled "Economic Policies for Enhancing Competitiveness".

  • The Arab Planning Institute (API) conducted a training program for a Specialized Certificate on "Institutional Reform". The program was held during the period 20-30 April 2009 in Nouakchott, Mauritania.

  • The Arab Planning Institute held a public seminar under the title "The GCC Common Market" on Tuesday 14/04/2009 at API's premises in Kuwait. A presentation was made by Dr. Ahmed Al-Kawaz.

  • Arab Planning Institute in Kuwait (API) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Planning Institute for Social & Economic Development, based in Damascus, Syria. Under the MOU the areas of cooperation include developing and providing relevant economic and social statistics, publication of reports on development issues, improving the skills of those responsible for economic and social development and providing technical advice for interested countries, holding training programs, round tables & conferences . The MOU was signed by Dr. Essa Al-Ghazali - Director General of API, and his Excelency Dr. Tayseer Al-Radawi – Head of State Planning Commission on March 31, 2009 in Kuwait.

  • Publication of the 82nd  issue of the Development Bridge Series entitled "Pro-Poor Economic Growth".

  • The Arab Planning Institute (API) held the Annual Meeting of its Advisory Board on 24/3/2009. The Meeting was chaired by API’s Director General - Dr. Essa Al-Ghazali. The Board discussed the institute’s 2008/2009 Work Plan, and the Seventh Strategy Work Plan 2010-2015. Members attending the meeting included Dr. Ali Abdel Ghadir Ali - API's Deputy Director General, Dr. Ahmed Al-Kawaz – Coordinator of API’s Research Committee; Dr. Ibrahim Elbadawi – Director of Macroeconomic Research Department in Dubai Economic Policy & Research Institute; Dr. Sulaiman Al-Jassim, Vice President of Zayed University, UAE; and Dr. Nader Al-Kabbani, Director of Research - The Syria Trust for Development.

  • The Arab Planning Institute held its 8th International Conference on "The Role of the Private Sector in Development: Assessment and Prospects", during the period 23-25 March 2009, in Beirut, Lebanon.

  • The Arab Planning Institute held a public seminar under the title "Global Financial Crisis and its Effect on GCC Countries" on Tuesday 17/03/2009 at API's premises in Kuwait. Presentations were made by Dr. Weshah Razzak , Dr. Ibrahim Onour, Dr. Dr. Walid Abdmoulah.

  • The Arab Planning Institute held a public seminar under the title "Uses of Oil Windfalls: The Case of Kuwait" on Wednesday 11/03/2009 at API's premises in Kuwait. A presentation was made by Dr. Mohammed Al-Saqa,of the Kuwait University.

  • Publication of a new issue of the Working Paper Series, titled "North Africa Stock Markets: Analysis of Unit Root and Long Memory Process ".

  • Publication of a new issue of the Working Paper Series, titled "Determinants of Arab Intraregional Foreign Direct Investments".

  • Publication of a new issue of the Working Paper Series, titled "The Political Economy of Inequality in the Arab Region and Relevant Development Policies".

  • Publication of the 81th  issue of the Development Bridge Series entitled "Foreign Trade and Regional Economic Integration".

  • The Director General of the Arab Planning Institute (API), Dr. Essa Al-Ghazali, addressed the closing session of the special training program on “The Quantitative Analysis of Educational Systems” held in Muscat during the period 7-18/2/2009. The API training program, requested by the Ministry of Higher Education in Oman, was coordinated by Dr. Riadh Ben Jelili – Member of API’s Faculty Staff.

  • The Arab Planning Institute (API) conducted a training course on "Surveys and Sampling Methods", favoring Civil Service Commission of Kuwait. The program was held during the period 25-29/1/2009 at API's premises in Kuwait.


  • Within the efforts of the Arab Planning Institute (API) to activate its development role in the Arab Countries, and upon Palestine’s request, API’s Board of Trustees – during the Meeting held in Beirut on 7/1/2009 – approved Palestine’s Membership at API. With Palestine’s Membership, Arab Member Countries at API became 16 Countries.


  • The Arab Planning Institute (API) named the following Members of its Advisory Board for the years 2009-2010: Dr. Ibrahim Elbadawi - Lead Economist, Development Economics Research Group (DECRG), The World Bank, USA. Dr. Sulaiman Al Hassim - President, Zayed University, UAE. Dr. Nader Kabbani, Director of Research, The Syria Trust for Development, Syria. The Advisory Board discusses API's Strategic and Annual Work Plans for appropriate perusal by API's Board of Trustees.


  • Arab Planning Institute (API) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Financial Institute - Bassel Fleihan Institute of Finance and Economics, based in Beirut - Lebanon. Under the MOU the areas of cooperation include developing and providing relevant economic and social statistics, publication of reports on development issues, improving the skills of those responsible for economic and social development and providing technical advice for interested countries, holding training programs, round tables & conferences . The MOU was signed by Dr. Essa Al-Ghazali, Director General of API and H.E. The Lebanese Minister of Finance Dr. Mohammad Shatah on Jan. 7, 2009 in Beirut - Lebanon.


  • The Arab Planning Institute (API) held the 1st Meeting of its Board of Trustees for 2008/2009 on 7/1/2009 in Beirut – Lebanon. The Meeting was chaired by Mr. Hisham Abdullah, Asst. Under Secretary of International Cooperation Sector, Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation, Representative of Yemen in API’s Board of Trustees. The Meeting was attended by 14 representatives of Arab Member Countries, in addition to API’s Director General – Dr. Essa Al-Ghazali, and Deputy Director General - Dr. Ali Abdel Gadir Ali. In this Meeting, the Board of Trustees approved API's Scientific and Financial reports for 2007/2008.


  • Publication of a new issue of the Working Paper Series, titled "A Nonparametric Approach To Evaluating Inflation-Targeting Regimes".

  • Publication of the 79th  issue of the Development Bridge Series entitled "Measuring the Rates of Return to Education".

  • Publication of the first  issue of volume 11 of the Journal of Development and Economic Policies-Jan 2009.

  • The Arab Planning Institute (API) participated in The Forum on: "The Current International Financial Crisis: Implications and Lessons for the Arab Countries", organized by The General Union of Arab Chambers (UAC), during the period 2-3/12/2008 in Beirut – Lebanon. API was represented in the Forum by Dr. Essa Al-Ghazali - API's Director General.

  • The Arab Planning Institute held a public seminar under the title "Tax Reform in The State of Kuwait" on Wednesday 03/12/2008 at API's premises in Kuwait. A presentation was made by Dr. Abbas Abdullah Almugren.

  • Publication of the 78th  issue of the Development Bridge Series entitled "External Development Aid" .

  • Publication of a new issue of the Working Paper Series, titled "Unemployment And Labor Market Institutions: Theory And Evidence From The GCC".

  • The Arab Planning Institute (API) participated in The Regional Conference on: "The Development of Justice Systems in the Arab Countries", organized by The Program on Governance in the Arab Region (POGAR) – The United Nations Development Program (UNDP), during the period 29-30/11/2008 in Beirut – Lebanon.


  • The Arab Planning Institute (API) conducted a training course on "The Use of Econometric Models for Evaluation of Policies", favoring Syrian State Planning Commission. The program was held during the period 23-27/11/2008 in Damascus, Syria.


  • The Arab Planning Institute (API) participated in The GIFT-MENA Steering Committee Meeting, which was organized by the Institute of Finance-Basil Fuliehan Institute, during the period 3-6/11/2008 in Beirut– Lebanon. API was represented in the Meeting by Mr. Karim Darwiche - API's External Relations Manager.


  • The Arab Planning Institute held a public seminar under the title "Inflation Targeting: What Matters for the GCC?" on Tuesday 04/11/2008 at API's premises in Kuwait. A presentation was made by Dr. Weshah Razzak.

  • The Arab Planning Institute (API) participated in a seminar on " Public Policies and Poverty Reduction in Jordan and the Arab Countries" which was organized by the Jordan Center for Public Policy Research and Dialogue in Amman, Jordan, on 1/11/2008. Participation by API included presentation of papers by Dr. Ali abdel Gadir Ali – Deputy Director General, on "Public Policies and Poverty in Arab Countries: a Selective Review", and by Dr. Belkacem Laabas – Member of API’s academic staff - on "The Impact of Public Policies on Poverty, Income Distribution, and Growth"


  • The Arab Planning Institute (API) participated in the Workshop on: "The Experiences of GCC Countries in Alleviating Unemployment" organized jointly by the Secretariat of the Gulf Cooperation Council and the General Secretariat of Development Planning of Qatar. The Workshop was held in the premises of the Diplomatic Institute in Doha - Qatar, during the period 21-23 October 2008. API was represented by Dr. Belkacem Laabas – Expert at API - who presented a paper on: "The Future of Unemployment in the GCC Countries: A Case study of Kuwait".


  • The Arab Planning Institute (API) participated in The 1st Arab Forum on: “The New Role of the Private Sector in Development and Employment”, organized by the Arab Labor Organization, during the period 21-23/10/2008 in Rabat – Morocco. API was represented in the Forum by Dr. Essa Al-Ghazali - API’s Director General, and Mr. Karim Darwich – API’s External Relations Manager.


  • Publication of the 77th  issue of the Development Bridge Series entitled "Institutional Reform Programmes" .

  • The Arab Planning Institute (API) conducted a training course on "Development Analysis of Education", favoring the Syrian State Planning Commission. The program was held during the period 19-23/10/2008 in Damascus, Syria.


  • The Arab Planning Institute (API) conducted a training course on "Poverty Measures and Policies for Social Equity", favoring the Syrian State Planning Commission. The program was held during the period 12-16/10/2008 in Damascus, Syria.


  • Arab Planning Institute (API) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Arab Administrative Development Organization (ARADO), based in Cairo, Egypt. Under the MOU the areas of cooperation include developing and providing relevent economic and social statistics, publication of reports on development issues, improving the skills of those responsible for economic and social development and providing technical advice for interested countries, holding training programs, round tables & conferences . The MOU was signed by Dr. Essa Al-Ghazali, Director General of API and Dr. Refat AlFaouri, Director General of ARADO.


  • Within the context of its 2008/09 Training Plan , API commenced its training activities for the year on Sunday 19/10/2008 at API's premises. It will be recalled that the structure of the Training Plan consists of four Diplomas, each Diploma consists of three Specialized Certificates, and each Certificate consists of two weekly programs, in the field of Development and Economic Policies. The 2008/09 training season started with offering the two diplomas on " Economic Development" and " Human Development.


  • Publication of a new issue of the Working Paper Series, titled "Self Selection Versus Learning-By-Exporting Four Arab Economies".

  • Arab Planning Institute (API) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the National Institute for Administration (NIA), based in Ramallah, Palastien. Under the MOU the areas of cooperation include developing and providing relevent economic and social statistics, publication of reports on development issues, improving the skills of those responsible for economic and social development and providing technical advice for interested countries, holding training programs, round tables & conferences . The MOU was signed by Dr. Essa Al-Ghazali, Director General of API and Dr. Ashraf Al-Mimi, General Director of NIA.

  • Publication of the:   Analytical Index of the Journal of Development and Economic Policies, Volumes: 1-10, 1998-2008.

  • Publication of the second  issue of volume 10 of the Journal of Development and Economic Policies.

  • Publication of the 75th  issue of the Development Bridge Series, titled "Composite Indicators for Measuring Competitiveness of Countries".

  • The Arab Planning Institute (API) conducted a training program for a Specialized Certificate on "Institutional Reform", on request from the syrian State Planning Commission. The program was held during the period 8-19 June 2008 in Damascus, Syria.

  • The Arab Planning Institute (API) conducted a training program for a Specialized Certificate on "Institutional Reform", on request of the Ministry of Finance and National Economy. The program was held during the period 1-12 June 2008 in Khartoum, Sudan.

  • The Arab Planning Institute (API) participated in the General Assembly of the Goverance Institutes Forum for Training in MENA (GIFT-MENA), organized by the French Ministry of Economiy & Finance, during the period 4-6/6/2008 in Paris – France. API was represented in the General Assembly by Mr. Karim Darwiche - API's External Relations Manager.

The Meeting was chaired by Mr. Yehya Ould Abdel Dayem, Mauritania’s Representative in API’s Board of Trustees in his capacity as the Deputy Chairman. In attendance were representatives of 13 Arab member countries, API’s Director General - Dr. Essa Al-Ghazali, and Deputy Director General - Dr. Ali Abdel Ghadir Ali.   • The Arab Planning Institute (API) conducted a training program for a Specialized Certificate on "Social Development ", on the request of the Ministry of Economy and Finance of Mauritania. The program was held during the period 18-29 May 2008 in Nouakchott, Mauritania.

  • The Arab Planning Institute (API) conducted a training program for a Specialized Certificate on "Competitiveness ", on request of the Ministry of Small and Medium Enterprises and Handicraft of Algeria. The program was held during the period 17-28 May 2008 in Algeria.

  • The Arab Planning Institute held a public seminar under the title "The Role of FDI in Development in the Arab World " on Tuesday 13/05/2008 at API's premises in Kuwait. A presentation was made by Mrs. Mona Besaiso.

  • The Arab Planning Institute (API) participated in The 3rd Arab Conference on Human Resources Development, organized by Arab Labor Organization, during the period 6-8/5/2008 in Manama – Bahrain. API was represented in the Conference by Dr. Essa Al-Ghazali, API’s Director General.

  • The Arab Planning Institute held a public seminar under the title "Business Environment and the Role of Private Sector " on Tuesday 29/04/2008 at API's premises in Kuwait. A presentation was made by Dr. Ahmed Al-Kawaz.

  • The Arab Planning Institute (API) held the Annual Meeting of its Supreme Consultative Committee (SCC) on 27/4/2008 to discuss the Institute’s 2008/2009 Work Plan. The Meeting was chaired by API’s Director General - Dr. Essa Al-Ghazali. The meeting was attended by SCC members : Dr. Moudhi Al-Homoud – Director of Arab Open University, Dr. Atif Kubursi – Professor of Economics, McMaster University, Canada, and Dr. Taher Kanaan, Director General of the Jordanian Center for Public Policy Research & Dialogue. API's DDG and the coordinators of the thematic committees participated in the meeting.

  • Publication of the 72nd  issue of the Development Bridge Series, titled "Empowerment of Women: Dimensions and Development Indicators".

  • Arab Planning Institute (API) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Arab Labor Organization (ALO), based in Egypt. Under the MOU the areas of cooperation include developing and providing relevant economic and social statistics, publication of reports on development issues, improving the skills of those responsible for economic and social development and providing technical advice for interested countries, holding training programs, round tables and conferences . The MOU was signed by Dr. Essa Al-Ghazali, Director General of API and Dr. Ahmed Lukman, Director General of the Arab Labor Organization(ALO).

  • The Arab Planning Institute (API) conducted a training program for a Specialized Certificate on "Social Development ", on the request of the Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation. The program was held during the period 15-26 March 2008 in Sana'a , Yemen.

  • The Arab Planning Institute (API) conducted an International Conference on "The Unemployment Crisis in the Arab Countries", during the period 17-18 March 2008, in Cairo-Egypt.

  • The Arab Planning Institute (API) conducted a training program for a Specialized Certificate on "Competitiveness ", on request from the Information and Decision Support Center of the Egyptian Council of Ministers. The program was held during the period 02-13 March 2008 in Cairo, Egypt.

  • The Arab Planning Institute (API) participated in the Twenty-Ninth Regional Conference for the Near East, organized by the Food and Agriculture Organization of The United Nations, during the period 1-5/3/2008 in Cairo – Egypt. API was represented in the Conference by Dr. Essa Al-Ghazali, API’s Director General.

  • Publication of the 71st  issue of the Development Bridge Series, titled "Development Policies".

  • The Arab Planning Institute held a public seminar under the title "Democracy and Development in Arab Countries " on Tuesday 12/02/2008 at API's premises in Kuwait. A presentation was made by Deputy Director General - Dr. Ali Abdel Gadir Ali.

  • The Arab Planning Institute held a public lecture in Kuwait on Tuesday, 5 February 2008, 10:30 am to 12 noon . Dr Weshah Razzak, Adviser at the API, presented a paper entitled "In the Middle of the Heat: the GCC Countries between Rising Oil Prices and the Sliding Greenback".

  • The Arab Planning Institute (API) participated in Abu Dhabi Economic Forum, organized by Al Al-Iktissad Wal-Aamal Group, during the period 3-4/2/2008 in Abu Dhabi – UAE. API was represented in the Forum by Dr. Essa Al-Ghazali, API’s Director General .

  • The Arab Planning Institute held a public seminar under the title "Unemploymeat and the future of labor market in Kuwait " on Tuesday 29/01/2008 at API's premises in Kuwait. A presentation was made by Dr. Belkacem Laabas.

  • The Arab Planning Institute (API) participated in the Regional Conference of the Program on Governance in the Arab Region UNDP under the theme: “Supporting the Implementation of United Nations Convention Against Corruption in the Arab Countries”, during the period 21-23/1/2008 in the Dead Sea – Jordan. API was represented in the Conference by Dr. Essa Al-Ghazali, API’s Director General.


  • The Arab Planning Institute (API) held the 1st Meeting of its Board of Trustees for 2007/2008 on 14/1/2008 in Sharm ElSheikh – Egypt. The Meeting was chaired by H.E. Mr. Mustafa Al-Shamali, Kuwaiti Minister of Finance. The Meeting was attended by 12 representatives of Arab Member Countries, in addition to API’s Director General – Dr. Essa Al-Ghazali, and Deputy Director General - Dr. Ali Abdel Ghadir Ali. API was represented in the Conference by: Deputy Director General Dr. Ali Abdelgadir Ali, and academic staff: Dr. Riadh Ben Jelili, Mr. Rabie Nasser.


  • The Arab Planning Institute (API) participated in the Experts Group Meeting on “Urban Governance and the Millennium Development Goals: Towards Implementing MDGs' Target 11 (Equitable Cities)” organized by The United Nations Economic & Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) during the period 10-12/12/2007 in Kuwait. API was represented by Dr. Riadh Ben Jelili, member of API’s Academic Staff.


  • The Arab Planning Institute (API) participated in the Sixth Annual Conference of The Arab Thought Foundation, organized under the theme: “Arab Strategies For the Global Era: Energy, Investment, Media, Technology, Social Responsibility”, during the period 1-3/12/2007 in Manama – Kingdom of Bahrain. API was represented in the Conference by Dr. Essa Al-Ghazali, API’s Director General.


  • Publication of the 68th  issue of the Development Bridge Series.

  • The Arab Planning Institute – Kuwait organized on Thursday, 15 November, 2007 a Public Lecture on “Arab Economies in a Changing World” which was presented by Dr. Marcus Noland of the Peterson Institute for International Economics – USA .

  • The Arab Planning Institute (API) conducted a training course on " Strategic Planning of Education", favoring Ministry of Higher Education of the Sultanate of Oman. The program was held during the period 03-07/11/2007 in Muscat, the Sultanate of Oman.


  • The Arab Planning Institute (API) participated in the Symposium on labor Markets in GCC countries, organized by The General Secretarial for Development Planning in Qatar, and was held in Doha during the period 29-31 October 2007. API was represented by Dr. Belkacem Laabas member of the academic staff, who presented a paper on "The Role of Private Sector in Alleviating Unemployment in GCC Countries".

  • The Arab Planning Institute (API) held the second meeting of its board of trustees for 2006/2007 on 16/6/2007 in Damascus – Syria. The Meeting was chaired by H.E. Mr. Bader Al-Homaidi, Kuwaiti Minister of Finance. In attendance were representatives of 12 Arab member countries, API’s Director General - Dr. Essa Al-Ghazali, and Deputy Director General - Dr. Ali Abdel Ghadir Ali. The Board of Trustees adopted the proposed 2007/2008 work plan and budget.

  • Arab Planning Institute (API) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Pakistan Institute for Development Economics (PIDE), based in Islamabad,Pakistan. Under the MOU the areas of cooperation include developing and providing relevent economic and social statistics, publication of reports on development issues, improving the skills of those responsible for economic and social development and providing technical advice for interested countries, holding training programs, round tables and conferences . The MOU was signed by Dr. Essa Al-Ghazali, Director General of API and Dr. Nadeem UlHaque, Vice Chancellor of PIDE.

  • The Arab Planning Institute (API) participated in a Symposium on "The Perspective of the Kuwait Economy Under WTO Agreements: Challenges and Solutions" organized by the Arab Journal of Administrative Sciences on May 14, 2007, at Kuwait University. API was represented by Dr. Ahmed Al-Kawaz, member of API’s Academic Staff.

  • The Arab Planning Institute (API) participated in the 39th Session of the Executive Committee of the Association of Arab Institutes and Centers of Economic and Social Development (AAICESD) held in Tunis on Monday May, 7th, 2007. API was represented by Dr. Belkacem Laabas member of the academic staff.

  • The Arab Planning Institute (API) participated in the Second Yearly Session of Crans Montana Forum, held during the period 10-12/5/2007 in Tirana – Albania. API was represented in this Session by Dr. Essa Al-Ghazali, API’s Director General.

  • The Arab Planning Institute conducted training courses on "Measuring Poverty Indices" and "The Indicators of the Institutional Environment" . The program was held during the period 05-10/05/2007at API's premises in Kuwait in coorporation with Arab Institute for Training & Research in Statistics (AITRS).

  • Publication of the 63rd  issue of the Development Bridge Series. "Budget Deficit : Problems and Solutions"

  • The Arab Planning Institute (API) held the Annual Meeting of its Supreme Consultative Committee on 30/4/2007. The Meeting was chaired by API’s Director General - Dr. Essa Al-Ghazali and it was held to discuss the institute’s 2007/2008 Work Plan. Members attending the meeting included Deputy Director General - Dr. Ali Abdel Ghadir Ali, heads of API’s scientific committees, Dr. Moudhi Al-Homoud – Director of Arab Open University, Dr. Atif Kubursi – Professor of Economics, McMaster University, Canada, and Dr. Taher Kanaan, Director General of the Jordanian Center for Public Policy Research & Dialogue.

  • The Arab Planning Institute (API) organized a work shop " Competitiveness of Arab Economics : 2006 "on Sunday 15/04/2007 at API's premises in Kuwait.

  • The Arab Planning Institute (API) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Institute for Advanced Development Studies (INESAD), based in Bolivia. Under the MOU the areas of cooperation include developing and providing relevent economic and social statistics, publication of reports on development issues, improving the skills of those responsible for economic and social development and providing technical advice for interested countries, holding training programs, round tables & conferences . The MOU was signed by Dr. Essa Al-Ghazali, Director General of API and Dr. Lykke E. Andersen, Director of the Institute for Advanced Development Studies (INESAD).

  • Publication of the 62nd  issue of the Development Bridge Series,on the "Quality of Institutions and Development Performance".

  • The Arab Planning Institute (API) participated in the Executive Committee Meeting of the International Institute of Administrative Sciences (IIAS), held during the period 22-23/3/2007 in Brussels – Belgium. API was represented in this Meeting by Dr. Essa Al-Ghazali, API’s Director General, Member of the Executive Committee of IIAS.

  • The Arab Planning Institute (API) organized a round table on "The Economics of Climate Change" on Monday 19/3/2007 at API's premises in Kuwait. A presentation was made by Dr. Mohammed Nauman Nofal.

  • The Arab Planning Institute (API) participated in the Sixth Session of the Committee on Social Development, organized by The UN Economic & Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) during the period 5-7/3/2007 in Amman – Jordan. API was represented in this Session by Dr. Essa Al-Ghazali, API’s Director General.
  • Publication of the 61st  issue of the Development Bridge Series,on the "Measurment of Productivity".

  • Member of API’s academic staff participated in the activities of a Workshop on "Democracy and Development in the Arab World" which was organized by the Institute of Financial Economics of the American University in Beirut, during the period 23-24/2/2007 in Dubai - United Arab Emirates. Participation by API’s staff included presentation of papers on Sudan by Dr. Ali abdel Gadir Ali – Deputy Director General, and on Algeria by Dr. Belkacem laabas.
  • The Arab Planning Institute conducted a training course on "Ways of enhancing professional capacity and institutional structure for the investment promotion in Syria " within the consultancy project, request by the UNDP -Syria .The program was held during the period 18-22/02/2007 in Damascus, Syria .
  • The Arab Planning Institute conducted a training courses on “Building alternative development scenarios for Kuwait ” within the consultancy project, request by the Planning ministry - Kuwait . The program was held during the period 21-31/1 and 17-21/2/2007 at API's premises in Kuwait.
  • The Arab Planning Institute (API) conducted a training program for a Specialized Certificate on " Financial investments management", on request from Banque du Liban.The program was be held during the period 22/01/2007- 02/02/2007 in beurit, Lebanon.

  • In the context of coorporation between The Arab Planning Institute (API) and the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA), Dr. Ahmed Al-Kawaz presented a report on "Foreign Direct Investment Policies in the United Arab Emirates" at the Expert Meeting held in Doha, State of Qatar during the period 24-25 January, 2007.
  • The Arab Planning Institute (API) held the 1st Meeting of its Board of Trustees for 2006/2007 on 15/1/2007 at its premises in Kuwait. The Meeting was chaired by H.E. Dr. Ismael Al-Shatti, Deputy Prime Minister & State Minister for Ministerial Cabinet Affairs. The Meeting was attended by 11 representatives of Arab Member Countries, in addition to API’s Director General – Dr. Essa Al-Ghazali, and Deputy Director General - Dr. Ali Abdel Ghadir Ali. In this Meeting, API’s Board of Trustees approved the renewal for API’s Supreme Consultative Committee which includes: Dr. Moudhi Al-Homoud, President of the Arab Open University, and Dr. Taher Kanaan, Director General of the Jordanian Center for Public Policy Research & Dialogue, and Dr. Atif Kubursi – Professor of Economics, McMaster University and Deputy Executive-Secretary of ESCWA. In addition the Board of Trustees approved the renewal for API’s Deputy Director General - Dr. Ali Abdel Ghadir Ali, and approved API’s Scientific and Financial reports for 2005/2006.

  • Members of API’s academic staff participated in the activities of the 13th Annual Conference of the Economic Research Forum (ERF), which was held during the period 15-18/12/2006 at the headquarters of the Arab Fund for Economic and Social Development (AFESD) in Kuwait.Participation by API’s staff included chairing thematic sessions, presentation of papers and discussion.
  • The Arab Planning Institute (API) participated in the Regional Workshop on "Economic Policies, Firms’ Entry and Exit and Economic Performance in the MENA" organized by the Center for Strategic Studies – University of Jordan during the period 1-2/12/2006 in Amman-Jordan. API was represented in this workshop by Dr. Riadh Ben Jelili, who contributed a paper on the applied research methodology for a project to be implemented in Jordan, Egypt, Tunisia and Morocco.
  • The Arab Planning Institute (API) conducted a training program for a Specialized Certificate on "Institutional Reform", on request from Information and Decision Support Center of the Egyptian Council of Ministers. The program was held during the period 10-21/12/2006 in Cairo, Egypt. Dr. Essa Al-Ghazali, API's Director General attended the final ceremony and awarded the certificates to trainees.
  • The Arab Planning Institute (API) conducted a training program for a Specialized Certificate on "Social Development", on request from Information and Decision Support Center of the Egyptian Council of Ministers. The program was held during the period 26/11/2006 – 7/12/2006 in Cairo, Egypt.

  • The Arab Planning Institute held a round table under the title "Globalization and Unemployment: Challenge for Development" on Tuesday 5/12/2006 at API's premises in Kuwait. A presentation was made by Dr. Adnan Wadie .

  • Publication of the 58th  issue of the "Development Bridge" Series.

  • The Arab Planning Institute (API) participated in the UNICEF’s MENA Regional Review of the Maastricht University Course on "Policy Analysis , Advocacy and Partnerships for Children’s Rights", held in the Dead Sea, Jordan, during the period 27-28 November 2006. API was represented by Dr. Ali Abdel Gadir Ali, Deputy Director General – who presented a guest lecture on "Development, Equity and Children in the Arab World: A Policy Perspective".
  • The Arab Planning Institute held a round table under the title “Development and Women Empowerment in Arab Countries”on Tuesday 21/11/2006 at API's premises in Kuwait. A presentation was made by Dr. Ali Abdel Gadir Ali.

  • The Arab Planning Institute held a round table under the title "Development Dilemma: The Role of Economic and External Factors" on Sunday 6/11/2006 at API's premises in Kuwait. A presentation was made by Dr. Ahmed Al-Kawaz.

  • The Arab Planning Institute (API) participated in the International Conference under the theme: "On the Issues and Problems of Scientific Research in the Arab World", organized by Bibliotheca Alexandrina during the period 14-15/11/2006 in Alexandrina – Egypt. API was represented in this Conference by Dr. Essa Al-Ghazali, API’s Director General.

  • The Arab Planning Institute (API) participated in the workshop on "Poverty and Economic Growth", held during the period 5-8 November 2006 in Brussels, Belgium, which was organized by the African Economic Research Consortium(AERC). The MOU was signed by Dr. Essa Al-Ghazali, Director General of API and Dr. Hilal Al-Bayati, Director General of Arab Institute for Training & Research in Statistics .

  • Arab Planning Institute (API) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with The Social Affairs Section - Administration of Development & Social Policies - of the League of Arab States (LAS), based in Cairo,Egypt.. Under the MOU the areas of cooperation between the two parties aim to develop and provide relevant social development information, publish of reports on social development in Arab Region, improve the skills of those responsible for Social Development, provide technical advice for interested Arab Countries, hold training programs, round table and Conferences . The MOU was signed by Dr. Essa Al-Ghazali, Director General of API and Ms. Nancy Bakier, Assistant Secretery General - Head of Social Affairs Sector in LAS .

  • The Arab Planning Institute (API) participated in the dissemination conference on "Poverty , Income Distribution and Labour Markets in Sub-Saharan Africa", held during the period 12-13 October 2006 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The conference was organized by the African Economic Research Consortium (AERC) and hosted by the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA). API was represented by Dr. Ali Abdel Gadir Ali, Deputy Director General .
